Coming Up For Air
Somehow, three weeks have gone by. For the first time this month, we feel like we can officially come up for air and reflect on the past couple weeks. Anytime big changes or decisions come out of here, there is a ton of unease. Are we doing the right thing? Will people like the changes? Is this the right move for us as a business and more importantly as a community?
To recap the last three weeks, we expanded to the new space on March 3rd. We only closed one of the gyms, for half of a day, and still were able to finish the build out on time. We implemented a sign in policy at the North PB location to ensure the quality of coaching as well as maximizing the use of the equipment and space. Bryan also got married, which is kind of a big deal and from what I gather, adds some extra work to your plate. We also rolled out some new programs. Jenn started her Athlete Development Series and we were able to open the competition class up to the whole gym. Not to mention, we currently have two teams currently in the top 30 of Southern California, 6 athletes in the top 60, and our A-Team is currently ranked 13th in the world in the CrossFit Open. To top it all off, we threw a totally rad Grand Opening party and fundraiser for Chuck Wagner and Team Hoyt San Diego.
Well, the community has spoken, and it appears that everything is headed in the right direction. Attendance is skyrocketing. Our largest day ever before the new gym was 132 people. We now average over 140, have had many days with over 170 people, and now have a new PR of 185 athletes working out in one day. The largest class ever run was 22 people in the old Garnet location. In our first week, we ran a class of 38 athletes. Yes, it was a little hectic, but we have figured it out and are now we have the systems in place to do this every hour if needed. The online, pre-registration has also been a massive success. Although you have to sign up, once you do, you actually show up to class much more frequently. I was very happy about this and did not expect it. I guess you crazy kids are not as scared of commitment as I originally thought. We are excited to announce a partnership with La Jolla High School and will be taking over the strength and conditioning programs for their lacrosse teams. And, Jenn has been killing it with her private group training. Every ounce of feedback on these sessions has been filled with praise.
Most importantly, this past Saturday, one of the most heartwarming and rewarding events in the history of CrossFit PB took place. We gathered to celebrate the opening of a new gym and to shine a light on the efforts of Chuck Wagner and The Hoyt Foundation. Thirteen sponsors and nearly 200 people crammed into the gym, turned the music up, and watched some of the highest quality people I have ever met do what they do best, support each other. We walked into the weekend hoping to raise $2,000. When the final amount had been tallied up, the community of CrossFit PB raised $2,460 for a cause that most of you had probably never heard of. To exceed a goal by such a substantial amount leaves me speechless. I am a firm believer that if you put enough of the right people, in the right place, good things will happen. Well, the universe aligned itself on Saturday. If there was ever any doubt of us making the right decision by expanding, Saturday was a gigantic exclamation point saying, “YES.” Thank you all for coming, donating, and supporting such a great cause. In all honesty, who cares about us expanding to a new gym? A new gym is nothing more than some painted walls, new plates in kilograms that people can’t read, and some shiny new toys. What matters is the people that fill the space. This weekend has instilled the belief that we surround ourselves with people of the highest quality, and we are forever grateful. Thank you.
